Do you need a local web designer?
An honest answer.

For most of the actual work, location does not matter at all. But there are a handful of situations where being nearby makes a real difference. Here is how to tell which applies to you.

The honest truth: good web design travels well

Building a website is mostly a process of writing, designing, coding and testing. None of that requires the designer to be in the same room, or even the same county. Most web design happens over email, video calls and shared documents, and that works perfectly well for both sides.

For the vast majority of small business websites, you will never need to meet the designer in person. The brief happens on a call. The draft goes back and forth by email. The finished site is delivered through a link. Geography does not enter into it.

This means you should not rule out a good designer just because they are based far away. A studio in Manchester can build you just as good a site as one in Wantage or Cirencester, provided the quality of their work holds up.

The question is not really "local or not?" It is "do they do good work, communicate clearly, and deliver what they say?" Those things matter everywhere.

When local genuinely does help

That said, there are real reasons why some business owners prefer to work with someone nearby, and they are worth taking seriously.

You can sit down together

Some people find it much easier to talk through what they want face to face, particularly if they are not confident with technology or are not sure how to describe what they are after. A screen share and a phone call handles most things well, but if you would rather sit at a table and point at things, a local designer makes that possible.

This matters most at the brief stage. If you can explain your business more clearly in person than over a call, that clarity will come through in the finished site.

If you are based within roughly 30 miles of Faringdon in Oxfordshire, we are happy to meet in person. Swindon, Oxford, Wantage, Abingdon, Witney, Marlborough, Cirencester and the surrounding towns are all within easy reach. It is never required, but it is always on offer.

They know the local area

A designer who knows Marlborough is not going to describe it as a generic Wiltshire town. They will know it has one of the widest high streets in England, a strong independent retail scene, and a visitor economy that draws people from across the Kennet valley and beyond. That knowledge can make copy more specific and more credible.

This is a genuine advantage for location pages, local SEO copy, and any content that references nearby towns, roads, or landmarks. A designer based in your area will need less briefing to get that detail right.

It is less of an advantage if your business serves customers nationally or online rather than relying on local trade.

You are supporting a nearby business

For some owners, this matters a lot. Keeping work in the local area, supporting a business they might pass in the street, knowing there is a real person nearby if something goes wrong. That is a perfectly good reason to choose local, even if the work itself could be done from anywhere. There is nothing sentimental about preferring to support businesses in your own community.

What matters more than location

Wherever a designer is based, these are the things worth checking closely before you commit.

Their past work

Can you see examples of sites they have built? Do those sites load quickly on a phone? Do they look clean and say clearly what the business does? Is there a tappable phone number? Portfolio quality is a much better guide to what you will get than geography. If the examples look good on your phone, that is a positive sign. If they are slow or confusing, move on regardless of how close the studio is.

How they communicate

Are they quick to respond to emails? Do they give you a timeline and explain what happens at each stage? Do they write and speak in plain English rather than jargon? Good communication matters more than physical proximity. A designer based twenty miles away who goes quiet for two weeks at a time is harder to work with than one in Edinburgh who replies the same day.

What is included and what is not

A fixed price with everything included is very different from a low headline figure with additions stacked on top. Before you commit, find out: who writes the copy, whether Google Business Profile setup is included, what happens if you need a change after launch, who owns the domain when the work is done, and whether there are ongoing fees. These questions matter more than the designer's postcode.

Price and what you actually get

Prices for a small business website in the UK vary enormously. A very cheap site often comes with hidden costs: your own time, a monthly platform fee, lock-in that makes it hard to move later, or a result that needs redoing within a year or two. A proper fixed-price build with copy, design and setup included typically costs from around £1,499 upwards. That is not the cheapest option, but it is usually the most straightforward one.

Where AI Speed sits

We are based near Faringdon in Oxfordshire, close to the Wiltshire border. We work remotely with businesses across the whole UK. For anyone within roughly 30 miles, which includes Swindon, Oxford, Wantage, Abingdon, Witney, Didcot, Wallingford, Marlborough, Cirencester, Highworth, Burford, Lechlade and the surrounding towns, we can also meet in person if that helps the brief go better.

The work is the same either way. Our Standard package is £1,499 for a five page site delivered in about a week, including copy, design, Google setup and a month of support. We have an Express option at £1,999 for a seven page site in five days, and a Drop Everything option at £2,999 for up to ten pages in 48 hours. Remote or local, the process and the result are the same.

We will not pretend that being based in Oxfordshire is the only reason to work with us. You should choose whoever does the best work for the right price and communicates clearly. If that is us, great. If it is someone better placed to help you, that is fine too. The site is what matters.

If you are within our local area and would like to start with a conversation in person, just say so when you get in touch and we will arrange it. If remote suits you better, that works equally well.
